I started doing genealogy research the same way a lot hobbies get started- I had a school project. That was in 1979, and the only way to find information was to go to libraries, courthouses, cemeteries, and historical societies. Along the way, I checked in with the senior members of my family, too. I was always the youngest person in the genealogy “room,” but before long, I was helping other researchers. Fifteen years later, Kentucky’s genealogy room had grown and I had perfected my research methods. Using a computer program to store information was common, but internet research was still a few years away.
Today, most of my research is done online, and I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years. One thing hasn’t changed- the research methods I developed early allow me to quickly evaluate online records and find the correct information.
In genealogy, you're looking into the past, so information doesn't change, but new information is becoming available every day. As records are digitized, we can find out more about how our ancestors lived because we're able to learn about their communities and even find photos.
